Loyola College, Mettala, is a minority Catholic Co-Educational Institution, Affiliated to the Periyar University, Salem.
The Department of Physics was established in the year 2015 with ten students and received permanent affiliation from Periyar University in the year 2023. Here, students are pedagogically trained to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the realistic world. We offer undergraduate programme B.Sc. Physics. We have a well-equipped laboratory where students perform measurements on the physical world, verify the fundamental ideas through the designing and constructing experiments, recognize the factors, solve the problems and manipulate new materials. The Department registered a good academic record in the university examination, placement and also in creating many entrepreneurs. Our highly qualified and dedicated faculty members bring a wealth of teaching experience and research expertise, ensuring an enriching learning environment. They actively mentor students, support their academic growth, and cultivate scientific curiosity through engaging teaching methods and practical learning experiences.
The aim of the Department is to enable overall development of the students by involving them in various academic and non-academic events like Seminars, Exhibitions, Workshops, Cultural Events and Guest Lectures. Apart from academic work, students are encouraged to involve in association activities which help the students to interact with scientists, engineers and technicians which expand their relations in scientific society.

Assistant Professor & Head
He completed his undergraduate, postgraduate, and M.Phil. degrees at St. Joseph's College, Trichy. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Arul Anandar College, Karumathur, Madurai. His research expertise lies in the field of material science. He has scholarly contributed to 12 research papers published in Scopus- and SCIE-indexed journals. He has received three Best Paper Presentation awards and two Best Research Paper awards at various international and national conferences. He has presented his research work at five international conferences and one national-level conference. With seven years of teaching experience in Physics, Dr. David Prabu is committed to both research and education. Apart from his research and teaching contributions, he is dedicated to fostering innovation in material science, exploring the fundamental properties of materials and their potential applications in emerging technologies. His expertise and commitment to academic excellence continue to inspire students and fellow researchers in the field of physics.
Assistant Professor
She has done her bachelor and Master's degree in physics at Holy Cross College, Trichy (DT). She has completed her Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) degree in Vivekananda college of Education for Women, Thiruchengodu. She pursued M. Phil at St. Joseph's College, Trichy, and later obtained her Ph.D. from Thiruvalluvar Government Arts and Science College, Rasipuram. She has expertise in the field of material science. She has published three research papers in Scopus- and SCIE-indexed journals and has actively participated in two international and two national-level conferences, where she presented her research findings. She has 10 years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level and 10 months of teaching experience at the postgraduate level at PSG College of Arts and Science. Beyond her teaching and research contributions, she has demonstrated strong leadership skills. She served as the Head of the Department of Physics from 2018 to 2022, where she effectively led academic initiatives and contributed to departmental advancements. Her commitment to teaching excellence and academic leadership continues to inspire students and colleagues in the field of physics.
Assistant Professor
He completed his Bachelor's degree at St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli. He obtained his Master's degree from St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Palayamkottai, and his M. Phil. degree from Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai. He was honoured with the Student Projects Scheme - Best Project Model Award from the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, recognizing his contributions to innovative student research projects. He has 10 years of teaching experience in physics undergraduate students. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he actively serves as the Advisor of AICUF (All India Catholic University Federation), where he contributes to student leadership, community engagement, and social empowerment initiatives.
Assistant Professor
She has completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Shri Sakthikailassh Women's College, Salem. She has done her Doctoral degree in Physics at Sri Sarada College for Women (Autonomous), Salem-16. Also, she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA). Her research specialization is in Nanomaterials, and her doctoral research focused on "Investigation of Sunlight-Driven Photocatalytic Performance and Antimicrobial Activity of Metal Oxide and Graphitic Carbon Nitride-Based Nanocomposites." She has published six papers in Scopus and SCIE-indexed journals. Additionally, she has authored one book chapter in a national publication and two book chapters with international publishers. She won first prize in an oral presentation at the Two-Day International Conference on Biomaterials for Biotechnological Applications (ICBBA-2K24), organized by the Department of Biotechnology (DST-FIST sponsored), Mahendra Arts & Science College (Autonomous). Furthermore, she has presented her research at seven international conferences and two national-level conferences. She continues to contribute to the scientific community through her research, publications, and academic collaborations.
Assistant Professor
She completed her undergraduate studies at Shri Sakthikailassh Women's College, Salem, and pursued her postgraduate degree at Sowdeshwari College, Salem. She completed her B.Ed. at Ganesh College of Education, Salem. She has two years of teaching experience in Physics and has presented a paper on "Introduction to Crystallography" at a UGC seminar organized by the Department of Physics, Shri Sakthikailassh Women's College, Salem. Additionally, she served as an Academic Coordinator for one year at Shri Sakthikailassh Women's College, Salem. Because of her commitment to teaching, research, and administrative support, she remains actively engaged in the academic and scientific community.
The Department of Physics organized the inauguration of the Physica Association on August 16, 2024, at 10:00 AM, featuring Dr. N. Iyandurai, Associate Professor of Physics at Thiruvalluvar Government College of Arts, Rasipuram, Namakkal, who delivered a talk on the latest trends in material science.
In collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, the department also hosted a Workshop on Scientific Research Grant Writing on January 10, 2025, at 9:00 AM, with Dr. N. Vijayan, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-NPL, Delhi, and Professor at the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, as the keynote speaker.
The Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry jointly hosted National Science Day with a seminar on February 28, 2025, at 9:30 AM. The event featured Dr. S. Mohanapriya, Director and Founder of Kumaragiriscihub, Salem, who delivered insights on "Exploring the Wonders of Science: Innovations and Discoveries Shaping Our Future."
Dr. T. Sofia Nirmala has published a paper entitled "Microwave Combustion Synthesis and Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Traits and Optical Limiting Behavior of Sr2+ Ion-Doped ZnAl2O4 Nanoparticles" in the ES Materials and Manufacturing journal, published by Engineered Science publisher (Volume no. 27, Page no.1404). Moreover, she has participated in the teachers conference 2024 on the theme empowering educators organized by the institute of company secretaries of India (New Delhi)- Salem chapter in association with Periyar University, Salem held on 22.10.2024 at senate hall- Periyar University, Salem.
Our department provides remedial coaching to support students in strengthening their fundamental concepts and improving their academic performance. Special sessions are conducted to offer personalized guidance, enhance problem-solving skills, and build confidence in core subjects.
